Cyprus is an island nation located at the crossroads of 3 continents (Europe, Asia and Africa). Cyprus has a long and colorful history with influences from Assyria, Persia, Egypt, Greek Kingdom of Macedonia, Roman Empire, Byzantine Empire, Venetians, Franks, Ottomans and British. The island has been predominantly Greek with a Turkish minority.

All of that played a crucial role in shaping the island’s extensive and amazing cuisine.

Cypriots are very proud of their history, culture and of course tasty cuisine. Cyprus has a variety of traditional foods but none is as popular as the Halloumi cheese; the national cheese of Cyprus.

I remember when I was a child I couldn’t wait until school was out and go spend the summers at my grandparent’s village in Mesaoria, Cyprus. One of my favorite things to do was to watch my grandmother make Halloumi with fresh and pure ingredients. She used to tell me the recipe was passed down by her grandmother and that it had not changed for hundreds of years.

Tested and perfected over time, nothing is better than sliced Halloumi and watermelon in the summer months; the taste and the experience is just incredible. Please enjoy this very tasty cheese and let us know how you like it!
